    That definitely looks pretty interesting and has that "Hey this is something new" -appeal. It's always difficult to sell something when you're not unique in some way. I think this accomplishes it very nicely. Eases assembly, can look appealing and unique, and can give something for the engineer husband to play with for no reason after it's assembled.

    Hey, did you also cut the slots in the chair legs for the plates on the cnc, or did you have to create some kind of jig to router them.

  • @Itslvle
    @Itslvle Рік тому

    8:05 I'm worried that this joining method won't hold much weight because of the round dowel. It's kinda designed to pop out if you put weight on it because it'll bend the bottom piece outwards and just fall down. A rectangular dowel wouldn't do that because there's no slope to help it rise out of the slot. Of course if the whole thing is super rigid it won't happen, but plywood tends to have a bit of a give to it. If you're really into the round look but still want the stability, you could make the dowel a very rounded flat piece so that there's enough of a flat spot to prevent that, umm, slope-effect.

    • @ConorCoghlan
      @ConorCoghlan Рік тому

      Hey! The orginal intention was for the pieces to snap together but atfer we made the first prototype the it was much more rigid and stronger than expected so I wnet with it aand decided to make it a sliding joint as opposed to a snap one. We've tested it with a bunch of weight and it's super strong. I take your point about the different shape but I feel the round dowel is a beautiful detail and suits the design really well. Maybe in the next vid I can do a strenght test to give a visual example! Thanks for watching!

    • @Itslvle
      @Itslvle Рік тому

      @@ConorCoghlan Okay, reality trumps theoretical concerns. It's really all about how rigid the main body is so if it doesn't have that much give, a round dowel will do just fine.

    Definitely prefer the backrest that flares up towards the top than the rounder version you started with. Maybe even a bit pointier top corners perhaps? Well design is in the eye of the beholder of course. One thing I would consider is playing around with the part where the seat and the feet meet. It doesn't necessarily have to be a flat mating surface all the way. Something along the lines of the stuff Foureyes furniture do with their tables. Just cutting out a bit of the support here and there to make more interesting shapes. Again, eye of the beholder, but I like my eyes so my opinion is the best.

    • @ConorCoghlan
      @ConorCoghlan Рік тому

      Hey! Thanks for watching. Glad you like the direction it’s going. Yeah I totally agree about the flared or tapered shapes working better. I’m trying to find a balance of the chair being elegant and express the forces, yet not overly dynamic - too angular or overly mid century modern. I will certainly check out foureyes for some details. Haven’t watched him in a while!

    I'm a boatbuilder and industrial designer. I often help out some furniture designers find fabrication solutions. This is just a thought, but I wonder if the bag would have a harder time sucking into those edge gaps if the mould were a couple inches wider than the part. And/Or maybe even a sacrificial bendy ply/hdpe layer over top that is a couple inches wider. Following that line of thinking: A clamping caul that has tambour corners. Tacked down with a few screws to the mould below. Gets rid of the tape operation. Work it down with a few small hand clamps. Screw it down. Into the bag. Vacuum does the rest.

    Would the vacuum bag work if you had side pieces attached to the form/buck that extended to the same height as the 'finished' profile (or at least a couple of mm below the finished profile height)? Really interesting experiments, though - reminds me a lot of generic vacuum-forming with heated plastics, and I wonder if there are lessons to be learnt from that field? That way you can slide the part on the right side in and just need to clamp it down so it can't slide up again. | \ | |_____\____| But obviously making either mold part a 2-parter will do the trick.
